How Many Countries Are Not in the United Nations?
If you’re wondering how many countries aren’t in the UN, you’re not alone. Some countries have no official representation at the UN, and the Vatican is an observer state. Other countries that don’t have an official representation at the UN include the Palestinian State, Niue, and the Cook Islands, both of which are in free association with New Zealand. There are also other entities that wish to become member states but aren’t yet recognized as such.
The United Nations has 195 member states, but there are several non-member states. The Vatican, Palestine, and State of Palestine are two examples of these countries. The Cook Islands, Niue, and Northern Mariana Islands are smaller states in the Pacific. These countries are associated with New Zealand and the United States. Curacao is a sovereign state in the Caribbean, but has no permanent representative in the organization. Its government is based in the Netherlands, but it is not an official member of the UN.
The Holy See is a sovereign nation, separate from the Vatican City State. It does not have a vote in the General Assembly and does not want to influence international policy. The Holy See is the only fully independent nation that is not a U.N. member. While some U.N. members recognize it as a state, it is not a U.N. member. However, this is not a reason for not belonging to the U.N.
Non-permanent members can be elected to the United Nations, but are limited to a maximum of two years. These members cannot be re-elected immediately after holding a seat on the Security Council. In 2017, Germany was a non-permanent member, but is applying for a seat in the 2019-2020 term. This status is a big concern for African countries. The United Nations should reconsider the composition of the Security Council, but until then, its membership should remain as it is.
Several other countries are not in the United Nations. Kosovo, for example, declared independence from Serbia on February 17, 2008. It is a separate country, and isn’t listed on the official list of non-member states of the United Nations. However, it has joined the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, both of which are concerned with the international economy and global trade. The United Nations is not a representative body of all countries.
Although Taiwan is not a member of the United Nations, the country’s status in the world has changed dramatically since 1945. It is no longer an enemy state or accession state; it is a staunch supporter of multilateralism under the banner of the United Nations. Other UN member states have repeatedly expressed that Germany should be a permanent member. The majority of Chinese people now live in the People’s Republic of China.
